Where I’m From

I am from nuns in their condemning black robes.
I am from Quaker meetings full of acceptance and light.
I am from musty books tucked into glass-fronted cabinets.
I am from grape arbors on a hot summer day, from bees buzzing in tiger lilies, from dragonflies hovering over quiet ponds.
I am from monkey swings on apple trees, from home-made clothes, from a blue Schwinn bicycle.
I am from Holly Hobby dolls, from Chrissie dolls, from the Sunshine Family dolls, from Dawn dolls. But never, ever Barbie dolls.
I am from Donny & Marie, from Mork & Mindy, from Happy Days & Little House on the Prairie.
I am from a constantly criticizing mother and an absent-in-spirit father.
I am from seeing abuse up close. I am from fearing for my friends, from covering my ears to block out the screams, from silently acknowledging bruises. I am from learning to stay quiet.
I am from whispered conversations thru tin can phones strung between two houses.
I am from diving into books and rarely coming up for breath, from daydreamed stories spun on for days.
I am from excruciating shyness, from a mother who thought she could just beat it out of me.
I am from happy solitude and painful crowds.
I am from hot pavement that scorched my feet in the summer time, from straining to hear the ice cream truck, from the sticky, melting popsicle that ran down my arm.
I am from warm stalks of rhubarb dipped in bowls of sugar.
I am from raspberries plucked from the bushes at the bottom of the hill.
I am from hopscotch and jump rope and coming home when the street lights came on.
I am from fireflies in glass jars, I am from fallen baby birds rescued from marauding cats.
I am from hot summer days, lying in a field, listening to the cicadas thrum like high tension wires.
I am from cats named Ginger and Mabel, from a dog named Tuesday, from countless neighbourhood pets whose names I’ve long forgotten.
I am from suburbia.
